News from the shop
With the first semester behind us we can look back at some of the outstanding projects made by the students. In the Graphic Arts Class we had several students excel in their creativity in designing advertisement, brochures, cd covers, t-shirt designs and many other projects. It always amazes me the creativity in students when given a task of what they can come up with. The same assignment was given to all the students, the variety of ideas and designs produced were varied and ingenious. In the woodworking classes there were many outstanding projects built. One student a senior built four projects in the first semester. All of them large and very well constructed. A number of freshmen and others built some amazing projects as well. All of them complicated using several woodworking processes that they had to master. Several students took advantage of a new tool purchased last year. It is a CNC wood router. Using the computer the students came up with a design and then using the CNC router they carved their design into their projects. This tool has allowed the students to produce some very detailed work that was not possible just last year.

On November 20, 2011 the Onawa
Bobcats 4-H Club had their fifteenth annual Bake-In. Nineteen members,
along with many relatives and friends, started baking at 7AM and finished about
3PM. They baked approximately 160 dozen cookies, 50 dozen peanut
clusters, and 60 pies. The Bobcats were doing the Bake-In for a
community service project to make the West Monona gym handicap
accessible. Thank you to the community for supporting their
fundraiser again this year. The Bobcats also applied for and received a
mini-grant from the Monona County 4-H Foundation.
On December 20, 2011 the Bobcats 4-H
Club presented a check to Mr. Aden, West Monona High School Principal, for
$1,100 to pay part of the expense of making the gym handicap accessible.
There are currently two areas in the West Monona Gym that are able to
accommodate wheelchairs. This was a greatly needed addition to
our gym. Now everyone can come out and
support the Spartans! By Julie Miller
