Project Goals:
- Increase Knowledge - Positive health promotions/messages about physical activity will change attitudes, influence health habits, and support an environment of change. Collaborating community organizations will coordinate health activities, education initiatives, and influence community health habits over time.
- Behavior - being more physically active - Our goal is to increase the number of 3rd - 5th grade students reported levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity by 50%.
- Status - Maintaining a healthier weight - Our goal is to reduce the number of 3rd - 5th grade students who are at or above the 85th percentile for BMI by 20% each year.
Got 2 Move
Get 60 Minutes of Exercise - Community Capacity-Building: Students, parents, and the community will receive consistent information to send a unified message about the health risk of childhood obesity and the benefit and enjoyment of physical activity. New equipment at community sites will be used by students and other children in the community.
- Policy: School personnel and community professionals will become aware of the importance of physical activity and nutrition in preventing childhood obesity. School health policies will be reviewed. Community Coalition will do community needs assessment.
- Youth Programming: Students will learn how to use equipment. New equipment along with PEP grant equipment will enable P.E. to be more fitness based. Positive health messages from P.E. teacher/staff will promote health habit changes. Consistent health education incorporated into class subjects and coordinating materials to parents will provide consistent messages on healthy lifestyles and improve health choices. The majority of students will pass the Presidential fitness test. - Family Programming: Parents will support students' health habit changes and become a part of the volunteer school recess program.
